Lucy Layet – IGF Employee of Year 2014

On December 15, 2014, IGF celebrated finishing another year through God’s grace. It was a time of celebration, praise, prayer, and casting a vision for the future. Long serving employees retired and were celebrated. Each department voted for their employee of the year, and especially selfless servants were recognized.  Lots of food and drinks were consumed to the joy of all attending.

One of the final activities was to announce the employee of the year. Voted on by all employees, this was a high honor that came with a bicycle as a prize. When the votes were tallied and the results announced, head cook Lucy Layet was announced as the winner!

The MC started calling out Lucy’s name and asked for her to come up on stage. Silence. Heads turned looking for Lucy who was nowhere to be found. All employees were to be in the hall for this celebration. A cook went running out the door. A few moments later, the cook returned with Lucy in hand and shouting in celebration! Although women from the church had volunteered to cook all the food, Lucy was still tirelessly helping and supervising to ensure that her coworkers were fed on time. Even when she was being celebrated as employee of the year, Lucy was selflessly serving!

Lucy was escorted with shouting, singing and dancing to the stage. Director John Paul Kiffasi honored Lucy in a speech and especially highlighted that Lucy was voted the best as a woman – despite traditional views on gender that are prevalent in the culture. He was proud to honor her and encouraged the other employees to do so as well. He thanked Lucy for her years of service, which included being a house mother to the children in IGF dormitories.

It was a joyous day for all!
